Your independent Railay & Krabi guide
Railay, Krabi: limestone cliffs and the Andaman Sea
Railay is a boat-in peninsula of sheer limestone cliffs, four beaches, caves and lagoons, a short longtail ride from Ao Nang. Hand-picked boat tours, honest advice on where to stay and everything you need to plan your trip to Krabi.
- Tours rated 4.5 stars or higher
- Prices and ratings read on 20 September 2026

A peninsula you can only reach by boat
No road reaches Railay. Every arrival is by longtail boat or speedboat, which is what keeps its four beaches — Railay West, Railay East, Phra Nang and Tonsai — free of traffic, and what makes the crossing worth planning before you book anything.
This guide reads the boat fares, the walking times between the beaches and every tour listing on the partner's own page, and names the source of each figure (Wikivoyage, GetYourGuide, official pages) so you can check it yourself.

The cliff and the boat
Two things decide your trip here: the boat and the tide
No road reaches Railay. Limestone cuts the peninsula off from the mainland, so every arrival and every departure is a longtail boat or a speedboat, and once you are on the peninsula you walk. Wikivoyage's figure for the crossing from Ao Nang is about ten minutes; boats to and from Krabi Town use Railay East, which has a pier.
That leaves two fixed points. The boat sets your timetable and your fares, and the tide decides what is walkable: the sandbar between Tup and Koh Mawr only exists for two to three hours around low water, Railay East drains to mud at low tide, and swimming at Phra Nang is a low-tide affair.
The figures on this site come from Wikivoyage and from the partners' own listing pages, and each one names its source so you can check it before you book.

The layout
Four areas, ten minutes apart
Railay West is the sand: fine white sand and shallow water, cliffs at both ends, the landing point for most longtails from Ao Nang, and the best swimming at the north end. Railay East is the mangrove side: the boardwalk, the restaurants, the bars and the cheaper rooms, and Wikivoyage is blunt that it is not good for swimming or sunbathing.
Phra Nang is the southern tip, sand under cliffs with the cave and its shrine next door, and the busiest water of the day when the island tours arrive. Ton Sai is the cove around the corner: the climbing, the climbers and the cheapest beds on the peninsula.
What Railay feels like
See
Limestone walls at both ends of the beach, longtails pulled up on the sand, and climbers on the rock above the shore.
Hear
Longtail engines on the water and boots on boardwalk planks. With no road on the peninsula, there is no traffic.
Feel
Wet feet at the landing, fine sand underfoot, and heat stored in the rock by the middle of the day.

Railay is reached only by boat: the cliff cuts it off, and the timetable follows the water.

The places you will actually visit

Where you sleep changes the trip
Railay has the beaches and the cliffs on your doorstep, but every arrival is by boat and rooms cost more. Ao Nang is cheaper with far more choice. We compare six areas, with price bands and a hotel search for each.
- Railay West: the sunset beach, reached by boat from Ao Nang.
- Railay East: mangroves and the cheaper rooms, 10 to 20 minutes on foot from West.
- Tonsai: the climbing beach next door, simple bungalows.
- Ao Nam Mao: on the mainland, with parking and a pier to Railay East.
